Air-Gapped Knowledge Systems for Sensitive Deployments

Some environments don't get to call an API. For the Indian Navy's IT modernisation programme, "cloud-first" wasn't an option — the knowledge system had to run fully offline, with zero external dependency, in an environment where an internet connection isn't just undesirable, it's disqualifying.

The problem

Most modern document and knowledge-management platforms assume a live connection somewhere — a cloud model endpoint, a hosted search index, a SaaS backend. None of that clears an air-gapped requirement. The system had to do everything a connected platform does — search, classify, retrieve — without ever reaching outside its own network boundary.

The build

We deployed our document intelligence stack entirely on-premise: OCR, classification, and retrieval running on infrastructure inside the air gap, with no call-out to any external service at any point in the pipeline. Every component that would normally live in the cloud was re-architected to run locally instead, then audited to confirm it actually stayed there.
